Average American house normally has around 15-20 smart WiFi gadgets nowadays. Now, all these need high speed internet to work to their potential. If your router is not able to cover the entire space in your house then you can setup a WiFi extender to extend your WiFi coverage.
You can then connect your smart tv, security cameras, smart plugs, laptops, etc to this extender network. This option is a cheap and affordable method to extend your WiFi coverage. In this article we will learn if your kasa smart plug shows red light then how to fix it using the extender.
First and foremost to start with make sure you have already setup your router. In case you haven’t then follow the given below quick guidelines to complete its setup first.
Router Setup
- Irrespective of whichever brand router you have these guidelines works for all.
- So firstly, connect the internet cable from your modem to the router. Now if your connection is a fiber optics then plug the cable into the PON port of the router. If you are using an ethernet internet then connect the ethernet into the WAN port of the router.
- Next use your phone, laptop, computer, or ipad and go to the settings>>WiFi settings.
There you will find your router’s default network name showing up. Tap on it to connect to it. Different router have different default names. For example, a netgear router will come up as “Netgear-XXX-2.4GHz” or “Netgear-XXX-5GHz”, etc. - Moreover, you can also find the default name of your router at the sticker pasted on the bottom of it.
Once connected, you will have to open a browser like chrome, safari, etc on the same device. Now into the URl of the address bar type the default ip address of the router. - Now again different routers have different IP addresses. For example to access the login page of netgear you will have to type 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. You can search on google or find the IP of your at the sticker pasted on the bottom of the router.
- On the login page follow the on screen instructions to complete the setup. Also kindly make sure to note down the SSID and password of the router as we will require it during the extender setup.
Tp-Link RE315 AC1200 Setup
- Now, since we have setup a router/access point we can now go ahead and start the tp-link extender setup.
- For this plug the RE315 extender in close proximity to your router. It should be within 5-10 feet of range.
- Next wait for at least 2 minutes after plugging the extender. As it will reboot and then only you will be able to start its setup.
- Now, there are two ways to set it up. First is via wps which is easier and second is via browser.
Method 1
- In this you will have to press the wps button present on the side of the extender for around 2 seconds. As you do that you will see a blinking light coming up on the extender.
- Within 2 minutes you will have to press the wps button on the router too. Again the wps led on the router will also start flashing.
- Both these devices will get connected within the next 30 seconds and a solid WiFi led on the extender will confirm this.
- You will then see a new network in your WiFi list which will be the RE315 tp link extender network. You can connect to it using the same password as your router.

Method 2
- This is a browser setup method.
- In this also plug the extender into the same room as the router. In case you have already tried the wps setup and failed then we recommend you to reset the extender once. You can do that by holding the paper clip inside the reset hole of the extender for around 10 seconds while the extender is plugged into the wall.
- After successful reset use your phone, computer, or ipad and go to the WiFi list.
- There look for “Tp-Link-XXX-2.4GHz” or Tp-Link-XXX-5Ghz” network.
- Tap on it to connect to it. Once connected the setup window will come up automatically.
- In case it doesn’t then open a browser like safari, chrome, edge, etc. Now, into the URL type “tplinkrepeater.net” and hit enter. This will open the setup page of the extender for you.
- There follow the on screen instructions to complete the setup.
- Moreover, you will need to select your router’s ssid and type its password for verification.
- After the setup is complete then you can plug this extender halfway between your router and the location where you Kasa smart plug is plugged in.
Conclusion
Kasa plug shows a red light due to poor internet connection. So once you connect kasa plug to the tplink extender then this issue will be resolved.
